For students (ages 9-adult) who read well and who enjoy reading, and who really want to read and know more about fantasy is literature!

Like our reading extension course in Science Fiction , our Fantasy Elective Reading Program provides the student a guided tour of the great writers and works in this magical genre.

First, the genre and its history are briefly explained. Links are also provided to many of the over two years worth (at a novel per month) of recommended reading.

Recommendations are indicated for each book as to whether or not Step 3 (ages 9-10) students should be able to read the book, or whether it should be restricted to Step 4, ages 11-adult.

With the ancient Greek Homer's 2,700 year-old tale, The Odyssey , the journey begins! Through Aesop’s Fables, Beowulf, and Shakespeare's eternal tale of a magical forest, A Midsummer Night's Dream , the journey makes its way to our day and time. Through the frightening and masterful imaginings of Edgar Allan Poe, Kipling's talking beasts in The Jungle Book , and Dickens’s immortally haunting A Christmas Carol.Peter Pan, Alice In Wonderland, Bilbo Baggins and Harry Potter – they're all here! The glories of fantasy writing in a survey that lays out the history of the genre while presenting its greatest works.

Many of the books listed are available for free download via the Internet, and links to over a dozen of the recommended works are provided to make this easier. At least a year of elective reading, and probably a good deal more. Your student will not run out of the inspired dreams of our greatest imaginative writers soon!
