This is the first science course in Year 2 for Step 1 (ages 5-6). A huge course, 27 big lesson plans, 14 weeks of science covering the basics of biology for our youngest students, and all while developing literacy.

Why is life able to survive on Earth? What is life? What do living things do? The basics are covered before the student starts to study the plant kingdom. Trees, grasses, bushes, flowers, the student gets a hands-on look at plants and how we interact with them. Then, we move into the animal kingdom. Fish, amphibians, insects, reptiles, birds and mammals are covered for the age group with many links to films on the Internet.  (Please note - not all links on the Internet stay "live."  If you find a dead link on the course, a simple search will probably replace it - but it probably won't be necessary.)

Lessons include:

  • What is life?
  • The qualities that living things share.
  • Plants and trees, where and how they live.
  • Algae.
  • What is an animal?
  • Fish
  • Amphibians
  • Insects
  • Reptiles
  • Birds
  • A lesson just about penguins
  • Mammals
  • The way different kinds of mammals live.
  • Man
